8 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SON DOONG CAVE



    Son Doong Cave belongs to Phong Nha- Ke Bang cavern, is located at Son Trach village, Quang Binh province. So far, it is considered as the largest natural cave of the world that ever been discovered.

     1. Son Doong cave was discovered because of... raining
        Son Doong cave was discovered by a farmer named Ho Khanh in 1991. According to Ho Khanh, he was finding agarwood in the forest at that time.He met a heavy rain forest while finding agarwood. Ho Khanh decided to look for shelter because he was afraid of flash flood. Coincidentally, the rain shelter that he stood was right at Son Doong cave.

2. Son Doong had been missing for 15 years


   At the time discovered Son Doong cave, Ho Khanh didn’t know about the cave value. Not long after his trip, he quit finding agarwood and went back to farming.


    15 years later, the whereabouts of this cave was still in the dark. Untill 2006, when an expedition of the British Royal Association went to search for new caves in Phong Nha – Ke Bang, Khanh told his story about the cave to them. That was when the journey looking for the old cave started.

3. Son Doong cave wasn’t displayed on Google Earth


  However, the trip finding the old cave wasn’t completely successful. All that in Khanh’s memory was a large cave with winds blowing for 24/24.
   Even with the assistance of sophisticated scientific equipments and Google Earth software, the expedition didn’t find the Son Doong cave. Up to 2009, Mr. Ho Khanh officially rediscovered the cave of the past.

4. Son Doong cave is far wide enough to become an aircraft parking area


   According to geologists, Son Doong cave was formed by around 2-5 million years ago, when the river runs along the limestone buried along a fault line. The water current causes erosion and creates a giant tunnel as today.


   The size of Son Doong cave is very large with a length of at least 5 kilometers, which is equivalent to the capacity of about 68 Boeing 777 airplanes.
  Even this figure may be larger because according to scientists, the most modern facilities of today have not fully explore the real length of this cave.

5. Son Doong cave is called the "Great Wall" of Vietnam


   In the Son Doong cave, the experts discovered the enormous size positions. A picture taken by photographer Peter Carten on May, 2010 recorded the cave part with the width of 91,44 meters and the high arch of nearly 243,84 meters – absolutely “stuffs” enough a 40-storey tall building in New York.


    National Geographic website even compares that cave is far high enough to stack 25 double-decker buses in.


    The majestic and monumental landscape of Son Doong cave makes the world honor it as “The Great Wall of Vietnam”.

6. In Son Doong cave, visitors can find ... "paradise" for their own




   Son Doong cave is famous for not only its giant size but also a variety of biological landscape .
  In the Son Doong cave, explorers discover a primitive forests with abundant vegetation, there has never been human traces. Experts have even called the forest in this cave as “The  Garden of heaven” to honor this breathtaking beauty.

7. Son Doong cave owns a “pearl” as big as a baseball


   Another special thing of Son Doong cave is the system of stalactites and giant cave "pearl". Over millions of years under the influence of external forces, Son Doong owns the 70-meter high stalagmite column. 



   It is also found these cave "pearls" (alabasters wrap pearl-like seeds of the sea, the main component is calcite), which are biggest in the world.
   Typically, this type of “pearl” only has a diameter of about 1 centimeter, but in Son Doong cave, it is as big as a baseball.

8. Son Doong cave attracts a supermodel to conquer


   With its beauty, Son Doong cave attracts a large amount of tourists which has 98% of foreigners. Among them, there are three-generation families have conquer this cave, or even the supermodel as Jasmina Mala (Czechs) and Prince Ahmed Hamdan (from Abu Dhabi) have caved the largest cave of the world in Vietnam.
